Barcode scanner and codes

If you look at any valid Tax Invoice in India, you'll see a column filled with random 4, 6, or 8-digit numbers next to the product names. These are HSN and SAC codes. They aren't just for show—they are the most important part of determining your tax rate.

What is HSN? (For Goods)

HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It's an internationally accepted coding system. It ensures that when you say "Apples", the tax officer in India and a customs officer in the US both know exactly what you are talking about.

The GST council uses these codes to assign tax rates. For example, almost all laptops fall under the HSN code 8471, which attracts 18% GST.

What is SAC? (For Services)

Since you can't put an internationally recognized barcode on a haircut or a software consulting job, India created the Service Accounting Code (SAC). All services are classified under these codes. For example, IT consulting services generally fall under 9983.

How Many Digits Do You Need?

You don't always need the full 8-digit code. The rules depend on your business size:

- Turnover below ₹5 Crores: 4-digit code is mandatory for B2B invoices (optional for B2C).
- Turnover above ₹5 Crores: 6-digit code is mandatory for all invoices.
- Import/Export: Full 8-digit code is absolutely mandatory.

Why You Shouldn't Guess Them

Many business owners just search Google, copy the first number they see, and put it on their invoice. This is dangerous. If you use the wrong HSN code, you might apply an 18% tax rate instead of 28%. When the audit happens, the government will demand that missing 10% from your own pocket, plus interest and penalties.

Never get it wrong again

BookSmart comes with an inbuilt, searchable HSN and SAC code directory. It automatically suggests the correct GST rate based on the code you select.
